In the Trenches
by Katy Waggoner
Jay Hacker is not afraid to get his hands dirty for his love of tennis. He really puts the work in volunteer work. Though retired for a few years now, judging by the amount of time Jay spends at the Midwest office, it could appear that he still maintains a full time job. Beyond simply giving of his time as a loyal volunteer, and presently serving as President of the Midwest Youth Tennis & Education Foundation, Jay is eager to give a literal helping hand and tackle any task with tireless energy.
USTA/Midwest Section staff members are never surprised to see Jay several days a week around the new building which was completed in May 2006. He worked on numerous projects beyond just the planning and building of the Hall of Fame and the building itself. Going the extra distance by installing light fixtures, creating display cases, and laying paver bricks for the walk outside, Jay is a hands-on contributor. He has most recently been spotted outside the building landscaping and improving the grounds. If you can’t find Jay outside, wheelbarrow in tow, maybe look for him on the tennis court. Not only is Jay a relentless worker and valued volunteer, but a true tennis enthusiast, playing on multiple league teams and serving as captain.
